All In One For Profit: Tips for the Day
by Steve Kennedy
Three tips a day. One year. A business that lasts.
Every day of the year brings three short tips: one for starting a small business, one for running it and one for growing it. The book follows the calendar, so the forms, deadlines and seasons arrive when they do in real life: the W-2s and 1099s in January, partnership and S corporation returns in March, individual returns and the first estimated payment in April, Small Business Saturday in November and the year-end decisions in December.

Registering the business, the accounts, the insurance and the first filings.
Books, tax dates, customers and records, kept so a busy season never buries them.
Marketing, reviews, referrals, pricing and the habits that bring customers back.
A sample day: January 1
Day 1 of 365. Week 1: Your one sentence.
Write the one sentence first
Before a logo, a website or a business card, write one sentence: what you sell, to whom, and roughly what it costs them. If a stranger cannot repeat it back after hearing it once, it is not finished. Every decision this year, from your prices to your advertising, gets measured against that sentence, so give it a morning now.
The year opens, the books close
January 1 is the last chance to close last year cleanly. Before any new spending, make sure every December transaction is recorded, every receipt is attached and the December bank statement is in hand. Your tax return, your 1099s and your W-2s will all be built from those December numbers.
Thank before you ask
Make your first calls of the year thank-you calls. Pick the ten customers who spent the most with you last year, or sent you the most referrals, and thank them by name, with nothing to sell. Customers who feel noticed come back and talk about you. January is when they decide whether you noticed.
Do this today: Confirm that December's transactions are categorized and the bank balance matches the statement.
