The First 90 Days of a Private Practice
by Steve Kennedy
Prepare. Protect. Practice.
Ninety days, one week at a time, for a counselor, tutor, trainer or coach opening a practice: the license and scope, the space and schedule, fees and packages, privacy and records, intake and consent, notes, getting paid and filling the calendar. Each week follows three practitioners sharing one building, with the work in plain steps, the mistakes people make, and five things to have done by Friday.

A sample: how Week 1 begins
Week 1: Define the Practice The story.
The room was eleven feet by thirteen, with a window onto Alder Street, a radiator that knocked in the mornings and a carpet the color of weak tea. Lena Ortiz signed the lease on a Monday and stood in the empty room for a long time, trying to imagine it full of people who needed her.
She had been a counselor at the Port Alder Community Clinic for eight years. She had a full caseload, a waiting list she could do nothing about and a supervisor who scheduled her for fifty-minute sessions back to back from eight in the morning until six at night. She was good at the work. She was also exhausted, and she had begun, quietly, to dread Mondays.
Across the hall, Sam Achebe was assembling a whiteboard. He had taught high school math for fourteen years and tutored on the side for ten of them. Down the corridor, Rosa Delgado was unpacking kettlebells into a room the landlord had agreed to let her floor with rubber matting.
