The First 90 Days of Your First Hire
by Steve Kennedy
Decide. Hire. Lead.
Ninety days, one week at a time, from deciding whether to hire to a trained employee with a complete staff file: employee or contractor, the job and the pay, becoming an employer on paper, recruiting fairly, interviewing and the offer, the first-day paperwork, the handbook, onboarding and training, hours and payroll, feedback and documentation, and safety, leave and endings. Each week follows an invented tutoring practice making its first hire, with plain steps, the mistakes people make, and five things to have done by Friday.

A sample: how Week 1 begins
Week 1: Decide Whether to Hire The story.
Sam Achebe's waiting list had reached fourteen students. Every weekday afternoon was full, Saturday mornings were full, and he had begun, against his own rule from Book 2, to take a few evening sessions, which left him grading practice tests at eleven at night.
Tanya Bell, who now kept his books along with three other businesses, showed him the numbers at their monthly meeting. His income per tutoring hour was strong. His hours were not sustainable. And fourteen families were waiting, each worth, on average, about $2,400 a year.
"So hire someone," Tanya said.
